Are we really going to war for Georgia?

So Dick Chaney wants to include Georgia (the country, not the state) in NATO.
.
As you may or may not know, NATO requires the United States to go to war in the event of an attack on an ally.
.
Do we really want to hand over the decision on going to war with Russia to a hot headed administration in the Caucasus?
.
Honestly. I know that Russia sucks and Georgia is democratic. BUT... Georgia has been part of the Russia / USSR Empire for hundreds of years. And the current President is poking at Russia right now.
.
Is it fair to Americans to take the decision to go to war with Russia out of our own hands and put it in the hands of a Georgian President who hates Russia (and whom Russia hates). I mean last time we even told Georgia we supported them, they attacked South Odessa, which is technically part of their country but has been occupied by Russia for 10 years.
.
Two parts of that country are already occupied by Russia. Isn't extending NATO membership to them a tad, I don't know, risky?

It will obviously make Georgia less flexible in discussions with Russia, and will accidentally make Russia less flexible as well.

It is a stupid idea.
