Precious is definitely one of the movies that suffers from hype. The acting (by Mo'nique and the lead) are outrageously good. But the movie is .. well you know the story. And the movie kind of is the story - so you just watch it play out.

I gotta say, unlike "The Accused", the rape scene was handled early and delicately. And, as much as I can't stand movies with violence particularly violence against women or kids, it might have been handled delicately.

That sounds totally awful, but it makes Mo'nique the monster much more than the actual horrible father.
