And children. Yes, if there is a couple with children where one spouse works and one stays home, it is a crap shoot if the child can be on the health insurance. It has to be the legal mother or father. "Can't the other spouse adopt the child?" you intelligently ask. Nope. That would be a domestic legal union in North Carolina - and hence illegal.

Here is the wording: The amendment says: “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.” In effect, it would bar the state from giving legal recognition to civil unions between same-sex couples.
Under North Carolina law, same-sex marriages are already banned.
.So, instead of a parent taking care of a child, it gets to be the government.

Or, if Ed and I go to North Carolina (we will never, but let's say United Airlines diverts us to Charlotte) and Ed goes into the hospital... I can't see him. Now, we have federal guidelines to fall back on as partners. So I might be able to force my way in (oh - don't worry, I would get in!). But what if someone has a child, but isn't the legal parent. She or he can't see the kid in the hospital. The 2nd parent can't make the medical choices.

So.. car wreck, legal parent dies, child in emergency. Unrecognized partner can't see the child or make any decisions for them. And, as the Catholic Hospitals have said, the government can't force them to do anything.
