McPherson, Kan. – McPherson College Athletic Director Doug
Quint announced Friday that Pete Sterbick has been named head football coach and
will assume responsibility for the Bulldog program on Monday, February 27. A
2003 graduate of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., Sterbick has spent the
last four seasons as the offensive coordinator at Grand View University in Des
Moines, Iowa.
“I’m excited to become a part of the McPherson community
and McPherson College football,” said Sterbick. “There were specifics in what I
was looking for as far as going to a program as a head coach and McPherson fits
what I had in mind. The experiences I had at Grand View in helping build a
program prepared me to take this step.”
“I’m pleased and excited about
our committee’s decision in the hiring of Pete,” said Quint. “He is a high class
individual, who we are confident will continue our tradition of excellence in
the football program, both on the field and in the classroom. I’m looking
forward to working with Pete.”
Sterbick helped build the Grand View
football program from the ground up, beginning in 2008, and quickly into a
nationally ranked NAIA program. After going 2-8 in their inaugural season, the
Vikings have gone 8-3, 6-4, and 8-4 in their three most recent seasons.
Sterbick was in charge of offensive play-calling, coaching the wide receivers,
and overseeing all offensive skill positions.
In 2011, the Vikings were
the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League champions and qualified for
the NAIA playoffs. The offense averaged 400 yards and 30 points per game on
their way to a #18 ranking in the final NAIA poll. Sterbick was voted as the
2011 MSFA Midwest League “Assistant Coach of the Year.”
Prior to Grand
View University, Sterbick worked as an offensive graduate assistant at
Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., for three seasons starting in
2005. He assisted with the wide receivers and during the 2007 season helped
develop the Cougars’ eighth-ranked NCAA Division I (BCS) passing offense which
led the Pac-10. Four receivers Sterbick has worked with have gone on to sign
NFL contracts. (Scott's Note: This is when I met him. He got us tickets to a Wazu - Wisconsin game. Hopefully he can get us better tickets to the Bulldogs games :-)
Before his tenure at with Washington State, Pete served
the 2004 season as an offensive graduate assistant and tight ends coach at the
University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. The Fighting Sioux were the
Northwest Region champions, NCAA Division II national semifinalists, finished
with a record of 11-3 record and were ranked third in NCAA D-II. In addition to
coaching the tight ends, Sterbick was responsible for the breakdown of the
opposing defenses in the development of the offensive game
plan.
Sterbick got his collegiate coaching start in 2003 at Missouri
Western State in St. Joseph, Mo., as wide receivers coach. He was responsible
for the breakdown of opponents’ defenses, assisted in offensive game planning,
and was the offensive sideline signal caller. During Sterbick’s one year at
Missouri Western, they finished 9-3, were co-champions of the Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and won the Mineral Water
Bowl.
Sterbick earned his Masters of Education in Higher Education
Administration from Washington State University in 2008. He received his
bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2003 from Augustana College in Sioux
Falls, S.D., where he lettered in football as a wide receiver and punter.
Following his graduation, he played one season as wide receiver for the Sioux
Falls Storm of the Indoor Football League.
Sterbick comes to McPherson
with his wife Brendee, and their daughter, Bree.
