Banjo was tied to the train tracks near Palm Springs because his owner didn't want / couldn't keep him anymore. Turns out the owner was an old man with dementia (doesn't really remember much and isn't great at right and wrong).

This is a whole series of sad events that turned around when an eagle eye'd conductor spotted Banjo tied to the tracks, and stopped the train. Really!

Banjo has had tons of offers of adoption and will have a new home by Monday.
