Dating oneself

I thought the Pentagon was the largest building in the world, floor space wise.  Which dates me to, so last century.  Well... the newest "largest building in the world" so I thought, How much bigger is it than the Pentagon.

Well, I turned out to be wrong on many many counts.

First Chengdu's "New Century Global Center" is huge, with a capital H.  It has about 3 times the floor space of the Pentagon (which we will get to later).  Since we aren't good with numbers, let's discuss in football fields.

It is more than a football field tall, 4 football fields wide and 17 football fields long.  It has a shopping mall, a hotel, a water park and a Mediterranean Village.  No slam to Chungdu, but there aren't a lot of good outside pictures because the air quality isn't so good since it opened (July 12th).

Then I looked, the Pentagon isn't even in the top 10 of large buildings anymore!  It's 13th after a long
list of Asian Airport Terminals, Shopping Malls and Casinos (and one very large flower mart in Aalsmeer Netherlands).  It is even behind the Palazzo in Las Vegas.

As for the oddest of the gigantic buildings (in my mind), the Abrj-al-Bait complex in Mecca.  It replaced an old Islamic fort that overlooked Mecca with the world's oddest jumble of Big Ben on steriods meets Desert Divorcee.
