This is Hever Castle in Kent. It was the family home of the Ann Boleyn, before she married Henry VIII. We visited there this past week-end and I thought it was a stunning place.
.
It has an odd history.
.
After Ann Boleyn married Henry the VIII - it passed to him. After her death, it passed to him. Later Henry married, then divorced his 4th wife, Ann of Cleaves. Ann of Cleaves actually got the Castle in the divorce settlement and lived out her life there.
.
Fast forward to the 1900s, and William Astor - the great grandson of the American zillionaire John Jacob Astor, left America for the civilized European lifestyle and purchased it for his family. They lived there through the late 1960s - when it was sold to a hospitality firm.
.
You can now get married there or stay in the "Astor Wing" which is the low slung village behind the Castle connected by hidden walkways and underground tunnels (you can see the beginning of it in the left of this picture).
.
It was very cool.
