History Then and Now

I am not sure if I can explain this to non-Americans, but I will try. We (Americans) think of ourselves as unique and authentic in the world. True or not, it is ingrained in us.

One of those reasons is George Washington who was able to be a King or Dictator if he wanted, but chose to be a President. And chose to quit after 2 terms. It was unique at the time. It is still a course of pride.

In the remix below history is mixed in a way Americans can be proud. A Puerto Rican (American) wrote Hamilton, the Broadway smash about Alexander Hamilton - a founding father, the founder of the Treasury and one of Washington's most valued partners. Lin Manuel Miranda incorporated the key parts of Washington's Farewell address into the song One Last Time.

And, in this remix, President Obama presents these words to us. A man who would have only been a slave in 1797 when Washington left office. We are taught to believe every American can grow up to be President. We didn't really believe it until 2008.

This is amazing....
