This put the war machine on full panic mode. Part of their panic is reasonable, in particular what will happen to the Kurds in the region, our most steadfast and effective ally. Turkey has already declared they plan to go to war against the Kurds, so that is bad.
But much of their panic seems to reflect a knee-jerk reaction to ever leaving a place until it has a pro-US government (and usually not even then).
One of the few things I liked about Trump during the election was his promise to get out of Afghanistan. He tried to do leave Afghanistan, but was overruled by his advisors. He seems to have learned his lesson and sprung this on this administration without running it by anyone.
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day (note - this saying will soon lose its meaning as youth use the "clocks" on their phone exclusively).
