Where Obama is Worse Than Bush

President Obama is, by all accounts save Fox, a fine fellow.  A bit close to the vest, over willing to compromise, but generally a fine fellow.
.
On the other hand, he appalls me in his overly secretive, opaque (as in the opposite of "transparent" which he promised) anti-whistle blowing Mafiosa-ish, single minded determination to continue trampling on individual rights of privacy.
.
Forget the Manning case (never mind - everyone has!) - where Obama's Justice Department has been cartoonish in their obsessive fear-mongering of widely available "classified" information.  The Pentagon, Administration and Legislative Branch have all agreed to massively punish this guy to show anyone thinking about exposing wrong-doing that it will not be tolerated.
.
Now the have attacked the free press, in my estimation.  The AP wrote a story in May about an Al Queda plot to down an airplane on the anniversary of Bin Laden's death (May 2nd).  The AP held the story back from May 2nd, at the request of "government officials" who said it might jeopardize national security.  When those self-same "government officials" said they could publish it, the AP did.
.
But the Justice Department was pissed.  So they subpoenaed the AP phone records to see who leaked the information.
.
Now Phone Recors subpoenas are supposed to be, by the  Justice Department's own rules, :
A subpoena to the media must be "as narrowly drawn as possible" and "should be directed at relevant information regarding a limited subject matter and should cover a reasonably limited time period," according to the rules.
So how narrow was the subpoena?  It covered 20 phone lines, used by 100 reporters in Washington DC, New York City and Hartford, Connecticut - a general AP switchboard and a shared FAX line.  And it covered them for a 2 month period.  FOR A STORY THE GOVERNMENT ASKED THEM TO HOLD, AND THEY DID UNTIL IT WAS APPROVED.
.
Look, and independent press is kind of critical to the function of a Democracy / Republic.  And whistleblowers are integral to that operation.  This administration has prosecuted more whistleblowers than the last six Presidents combined.  Did I say 6, I meant more than ALL PREVIOUS Presidents combined.  Politico Story, but you can read about yourself anywhere, but we seem to have lost hte capacity for rational discussion.
