So I feel for Caster Semenya.

She is the 18 year old runner from South Africa that has gotten a lot of shit because she doesn't look like a girl.

So she was tricked into submitting to a gender test (tricked is a mean word, but true - the South African authorities weren't allowed to tell her she didn't have to do this.).

Now from this girl's point of view, she has always been a girl. Her visible genitalia is female. But she has been made fun of her whole life about looking like a boy, so she submitted. Nothing to fear.

Turns out she is "intersex", neither boy nor girl. She has testees, but they never came out of her body. Nor did they turn into ovaries. For the vast and overwhelming majority of us, one or the other happens during gestation / pregnancy. She has no womb, but she has female genitalia.

So, unlike a hermaphrodite - which technically has both sets of genitalia, she has a mix.

What is sad about the story is that she had no idea. Why would you? If you were a woman and 18 why would you ever go get your gender checked. I mean she had been seen by doctors - who knew she was a woman. Everybody who did a blood work or an exam would say she was a woman. Only this test would come back and say she wasn't. And she isn't a man either (men don't have vaginas).

I think it would be tough to find out at anytime - but especially at 18 - and especially when the results were leaked to the press before they were told to you.
