Doris Nolan (the sister), Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn |
If you loved “The Philadelphia Story”, you will really like
“Holiday”. You may even love it. “Holiday” was made right before The
Philadelphia Story and also stars Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. It isn’t quite as witty, but was (is?)
probably more topical. Cary Grant is a
young man, about to make quite a bundle of dough and meets a girl he falls in
love with at a ski resort.
.
We start with Cary going to meet the girl, assuming she is a
servant in a Mansion, when she is really the daughter of the rich old
banker. Cary has some odd ideas about
taking time to travel and spend his money when he is young and tries to
convince the girl and her father. He is
less than successful. He is helped in
his quest by Katherine Hepburn, the girl’s sister.
.
I like Holiday and the story a lot. The Philadelphia story is a movie that is
always enjoyable. Holiday is more a
movie that you have to be in the mood for.
It isn’t constantly funny. And
maybe love doesn’t solve everything. But
it is great none the less.

The family (with brother Lew Ayers as a youth) |
Interesting side-note.
This was the movie that labelled Katherine Hepburn “box office
poison”. She had to purchase the rights
to “The Philadelphia Story” herself to bring it to the studio to get it made
with her. Fun.
