The last movie Clark Gable made before Gone With The Wind,
is probably one of his oddest. He and
Norma Shearer star in Idiot’s Delight – a bizarre tale of vaudeville, gold
digging and international intrigue that takes place in two distinct parts. The first part is set in New York where Clark
Gable is fascinated but a horribly lying, overly dramatic girl with grand
dreams and a large appetite.
.
Part Two occurs years later as train passengers are stuck in
an Alpine town at the beginning of WWII.
Clark Gable is pretty much the Mama Rose to a stable of blond beauties
who are old enough to drink and know better.
Stuck in the resort with him is a Russian Countess who looks amazingly
like the girl who ate through his wallet.
.
It is a comedy and you may have seen the one clip of Clark
Gable singing and dancing in the early “That’s Entertainment” clip. It is from this hidden gem.
.
It has quite a unexpected ending. As a matter of fact it has two different odd
endings. The US one is kind of easy and
happy. The International ending, is more
harrowing, spiritual and acknowledges the war.
